Red Nose Response Newsletter
Co-Editors Barbara Bird and Arla Albers
Volume 2, Issue 3-March 2008
Greetings Red Nose Responder!

From words of appreciation to an update on training, we have a lot to share in this issue.

The storm season seems to have started early or it never ended. The "winter storms" and tornadoes in Atlanta and the southeast have been unusual. As we write, the Midwest is again flooded. All the more reason that we urge you to learn about Safe and Well. With the anxiety that comes when you are in a disaster setting, the ability to let loved ones know you are okay is crucial. Read the article and then share it with EVERYONE.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERT: Be sure to read and keep the September 2007 E-zine detailing what you can do to help before, during and after a disaster. The issue that details disaster responses is available by download from our website under Archives.

The training manual is on its way to being released. Stay tuned for more information.

Thanks...and a bit more
from the Fraziers

Pam and I sincerely thank you for your kindness, words of comfort, thoughts, prayers, gifts and help after we lost our home and possessions in the 2007 Southern California Wildfires this past October. We were overwhelmed at the generosity of my two sisters Jan Payne and Judy Brown, my close friends, my clients, and the La Jolla Bar Association, Red Nose Response, Billy Graham Devastation Team, Fellowship of Christian Magicians, International Brotherhood of Magicians, Ramona Bar Association, Nancy Lyshol Yoo Hoo The Clown, Burt's Magic Shop, Members of Ring 76 of the Brotherhood of International Magicians in San Diego, State Bar of California, the Staff and Judges of the San Diego Superior Court, Lakeside Tang Soo Do, Master Clown Roly Bain in the United Kingdom, Sara Offut, Mime Rosemarie Ballard, La Mesa Tang Soo Do, United States Tang Soo Do Federation, World Traditional Tang Soo Do Federation, San Diego All Star Clowns, Samaritan's Purse, Red Cross, Curie Elementary School Staff and parents, the wonderful people at Circuit, Kellogg, McKinney and Ross, Coyote Point Yacht Club the Catalina Yacht Club of San Diego, our fellow joeys and now new close clown friends and fellow martial artists and new friends we have met following what seemed like a tragedy. We pay a very special thanks to the clowns from 16 clown alleys around the world that immediately supplied us with clown materials, magic, balloons, face painting supplies that allowed us to continue our clown ministry without interruption and without whose help we could not have continued our ministry events. We have been taken well care of and watched over by our family and children and grandchildren. This seeming tragedy has been a blessing to us, because we met so many new friends all around the globe and strengthened personal and family relationships.

As Pam says, "we have our outer clown but our inner clown has kept us strong". Your kindness gave us hope for the future and the knowledge of things we value most were not lost in the fires but found in the hearts and love of our family and friends.

After nearly 4 four months since the loss of our home we realize your kindness, love and generosity was far more important than we first realized. Each e-mail, letter and card from a new friend from all parts of the world saying they were praying for us gave us renewed inner strength. The last major event was a huge bag from the Red Nose Response Organization. They were actually the first to respond but we kept moving about. When the huge red bag finally caught up with us Pam and I wept openly for a while as it represented the love of our friends around the world. We will forever support and be a part of that organization in our Clown Ministries.

We are at peace with what has happened. My former legal assistant and fellow clown Karry Acuna, "Kupcake the Klown" has a saying we find appropriate, "We do not know what the future holds but we know Who holds the future." Love from Sam & Pam Frazier

Convention Exhibits
We need Convention Chair people

We have received offers to set up Red Nose Response exhibits at upcoming regional conventions and workshops. You saw the really effective exhibit that Marion Lovig, assisted by Elaine Vercellone, worked at the Clown City January Jamboree in Mystic CT. (The story and photos were in the February issue)

We appreciate the help. the enthusiasm and the support. We love the idea. Based on recent experience at last year's COAI convention in Springfield MO, the MACA in Harrisburg this last fall and January Jamboree we have begun to develop guidelines for setting up an exhibit.

This is important: Prior approval is needed to exhibit in the name of Red Nose Response. That should come by sending your information to info@rednoseresponse.org. We currently do not have funding to pay the costs of the exhibit itself, the items on exhibit or, in some cases, the exhibitor's fee.

Furthermore, we don't have a person designated to manage all of this so we are looking for volunteers to assist the Board of Directors as Convention Chair People. This person would apply the guidelines, assist in the planning and presentation of exhibits and communicate with the Board.

If you are interested in this role, please let us know! Send an email to: volunteer@rednoseresponse.org.

The Training Videos are Coming!
Filming will take place April 4 2008

The long promised Red Nose Response training videos are becoming a reality. Jeremy Cohen (RNR President) has arranged a filming date for April 4 at a studio in New York City. We expect that Bob (RNR Vice President) and Teresa Gretton (Advisor) and Elaine Vercellone(National Director of State Coordinators) will be on hand to help with this project.

The videos, yes, more than one, will include the following:

  • A brief overview of RNR
  • How You Can Help-An in-depth description of not just how we assist in shelters (Red Cross and otherwise), but at local fires, etc. and in non-Red Cross activities including local charity drives and other community events outside of a region impacted by a disaster.
  • Disaster 411-This will tell you everything you need to know about the RNR Communications System. This includes how we reach out to state coordinators, alleys, etc. in times of disaster and how responders should contact us.
  • Disaster Clowning 101 - This video will cover "Do's and Don'ts'" and go into detail about what to do in a shelter. You will have the opportunity to watch a number of vignettes where you will see real-life situations played out in front of the camera.

PLUS

Don't Clown Around With Disaster Preparedness-A unique class we have developed which will be offered to community groups, civic organizations and others interested in teaching their members how to be prepared for a disaster. RNR Responders will be able to be trained to teach this class in their own community.

Granted that this is an ambitious project, but our experience shows us that all of these topics are both important and have been asked for by you, our responders.

The videos will be available on our website.

The Pins and Patches You Asked For
Find us at your upcoming conventions

Pins (lapel type pins) and cloth patches are in production as we write this newsletter.

We don't have a photo image yet to show you but they will be like the RNR logo you see at the top of this e- zine with the words "Sending Smiles To The Rescue"

These items will be available for sale at very reasonable prices. We hope to have the first ones on hand for the COAI (in Richmond VA) and WCA (in Orlando) conventions in April, and the SECA convention Sept . 3-7 in Jacksonville FL. We will be hosting hospitality rooms at all of these AND MORE TO COME!

Look for your RNR representatives at these events to find out when you can get yours.

As a reminder for those who would like to have some unique RNR merchandise, be sure to shop our store. There are many items you MUST have, like buttons and stickers. How about a coffee mug for that morning cup of joe? Better yet, put a t-shirt on your dog!

Shop RNR items
LOOK FOR RNR at WCA and COAI CONVENTIONS
Find us in the hospitality room or the dealers' room or both!

Step up and make yourself known at the April conventions. There will be plenty to do at the RNR displays. We could use your help there as well.

We are looking for members to sign up for a few hours at the RNR table during the conventions. Whatever time you can give us will be great! If you have your RNR shirt, wear it. We're going to "WOW" them with our team spirit! At WCA be sure to look for Dianna Hale (Secretary of RNR) at the registration table.

Theme Night at COAI is NASCAR and RNR is planning a Pit Crew table for the evening. We're looking for a few good members to sign up and help us decorate our table. If you're interested, e-mail us at volunteer @ rednoseresponse.org. with your ideas. We could call our team the "Red Nose Racers"!

To volunteer for the Pit Crew Table at COAI

You are Red Nose Response! The organization would not exist without you and your generous offers to help and get involved. Take whatever disaster training courses you can find in your area. Share your experiences and suggestions. Tell other clowns about Red Nose Response and watch their eyes light up, just like yours did. Help us grow.

Sincerely,

Jeremy Cohen
